Thinking about making the switch from tobacco to vapes? You’re not alone! Millions of people every year foregoing the daily cigarette purchase and ordering vape deliveries. Many of these people are doing so to kick the habit. But does switching from cigarettes to vaping really work? For many, it does!

Here’s the reality: switching to vaping does not guarantee that you will defeat your nicotine habit, but it can really help. Vape pens and vape mods can often regulate how much nicotine you receive, allowing you to phase yourself off nicotine without changing your habit. Beating your nicotine cravings once and for all will still require formidable effort and will-power, but a switch from cigarettes to vapes can really help.

It’s important to note, however, that even switching from cigarettes to vaping already eliminates a variety of health risks associated with smoking. Read on to see how you stand to benefit from making the switch.

What makes tobacco worse than vaping?

Tobacco is rarely found on its own. Cigarettes often contain an abundance of additional chemicals, many of which are carcinogens. When you smoke a cigarette, you’re not just breathing in the smoke of burning tobacco. You’re also inhaling ammonia, arsenic, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and lead, among hundreds of other harmful substances.

Lighting up a cigarette causes combustion – a chemical reaction – that unleashes many of tobacco’s harmful effects. Vaping, however, does not require combustion to occur, and so many of these carcinogens are nowhere to be found when vaping. A recent study by Cancer Research UK asserts that people who switch to vaping have fewer carcinogenic chemicals in their systems than people who smoke.

What are the health risks of nicotine?

Nicotine functions both as a sedative and as a stimulant, causing your brain to release dopamine, a chemical that produces feelings well-being. Even though your memory and metabolism get a short-term burst, the long-term effects of nicotine are negative. Nicotine has an adverse effect on your heart and lungs.

The common thread between cigarettes and vaping is nicotine. Nicotine is what makes smoking addictive, and even though nicotine itself isn’t a carcinogen, it’s what gets you hooked on something loaded with them. Vaping contains nicotine, so unless you actively reduce the amount of nicotine in your e-liquid with a vape pen or vape mod, vaping will only help you ditch tobacco, and not the underlying nicotine addiction.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health believes in the potential for vaping to help people quit smoking. A part of the Ministry’s Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 initiative has focused on this potential, stating that, “The Ministry of Health believes vaping products have the potential to make a contribution to the Smokefree 2025 goal and could disrupt the significant inequities that are present.”

Are there any risks unique to vaping?

Largely, no. The differences between tobacco and vaping mostly centre around what vaping doesn’t have, rather than what it does. Vaping does not produce smoke, and thus contains very few of the harmful chemicals found therein, such as tar and carbon monoxide. According to the U.K. National Health Service, e-cigarettes and vaporisers do produce some of the same damaging chemicals found in tobacco smoke, but at much lower levels.

On rare occasion, certain flavours of e-liquids can contain a chemical called diacetyl, which produces a buttery taste. Diacetyl is known to put users at risk of a lung condition known as “popcorn lung”, and for that reason has largely fallen out of use.
